Objectives

Desertification and Groundwater

To investigate existing traditional knowledge systems which support to mitigate desertification and groundwater degradation
To blend appropriate traditional technologies with the latest scientific achievements to formulate appropriate guidelines to promote groundwater recharging and address desertification among the dry zone community of Sri Lanka 
Ministry of environment and wildlife resources has identified the importance of mainstreaming and utilizing traditional knowledge systems with the existing modern scientific technologies to address the desertification and groundwater degradation in primary producing areas. Hence, ministry is planning to gather such traditional knowledge systems and expertise and promote conservation-based development activities to ensure the future sustainability of primary producing areas, collaboratively with other research and development agencies. Proposed workshop will streamline the necessary strategies which could be incorporated in the “Segiriya” declaration.
